Is Citrus bergamot worth it?

IN

Bergamot has a plausible cholesterol signal, but the useful product is a standardized polyphenolic fraction or flavonoid extract, not bergamot essential oil. It belongs next to diet, fiber, sterols, and medication discussions, not in the "natural statin replacement" fantasy bin.

The call

Human bergamot evidence points in a favorable direction for total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, and LDL particle profile, but much of the clinical base is small, product-specific, open-label, or otherwise thinner than drug-grade lipid evidence. The Frontiers prospective study used a bergamot-derived flavonoid extract for 6 months in adults with moderate hypercholesterolemia and reported lipid-profile improvements, but it was not a large hard-outcome trial. Reviews describe plausible mechanisms from bergamot flavonoids and polyphenols, yet the clinical question remains product standardization and durability. This earns a mixed keep verdict for standardized extracts with lipid tracking, not broad cardiovascular promises.

Safety

Do not replace prescribed lipid-lowering therapy with bergamot without clinician involvement. Review use with a clinician or pharmacist if taking statins, calcium-channel blockers, antiarrhythmics, immunosuppressants, diabetes medications, anticoagulants, or other narrow-therapeutic-index drugs, because citrus extracts can have interaction concerns and bergamot may affect lipid or glucose markers. Avoid during pregnancy, breastfeeding, severe liver disease, severe kidney disease, or before surgery unless medically cleared. Bergamot essential oil is not an oral supplement and can be phototoxic on skin; products should clearly be oral polyphenolic extracts, not essential oil.

Dose that matters: Use only a standardized bergamot polyphenolic fraction or flavonoid extract. Practical study-aligned dosing is a daily product providing roughly 150 mg bergamot flavonoids or a standardized extract in the 500-1,000 mg/day range with meals for 8-12 weeks, then recheck lipids. Do not ingest bergamot essential oil.
